A haven below London's Picadilly Circus

Situated in Picadilly's Hotel Café Royal, Akasha Spa is a blissful sanctuary offering total escape in the capital. Upon entering the hotel, you head underground to the spa where there's no noise, no crowds, just total tranquility.

A bit like a marble vault, the spa is intimate, cosy and private - with it's winding corridors, you're unlikely to see anyone else. You can enjoy a refreshing swim in the dimly-lit pool, soak in the jacuzzi and relax in the sauna before being accompanied to your treatment room.

When it comes to treatments, your therapist will tailor them to your needs. The hot stone massage is what I tried out. A perfect balance of relaxation and rigour (those desk-job knots needed some work) - the therapist married Western techniques with ancient Eastern traditions and it was a blissful 90 minutes. The effects were actually long lasting too.

The thing that's so excellent about Akasha is it's total luxury without the stuffiness. You're put at ease and you're left in total peace to unwind.

As I said, it really is a sanctuary.
